Haircutting Competitions

Student Categories – Pre-Registration Fee $20 1. State Board Taper Cut (Student Barbers only) – 30 minutes 2. Men’s Fantasy Cut (Barber & Cosmetology Students only) – 60 minutes
Licensed Professionals Categories – Pre- Registration Fee $35 1. Men’s Clipper Cut (Licensed Barbers & Cosmetologists only) – 30 minutes 2. Men’s Fantasy Cut (Licensed Barbers & Cosmetologists only) – 60 minutes

Competitor Criteria for all Categories
1. Must be a member of Barbers International 2. Must be licensed if required by the category 3. Must supply verifiable documentation of licensure status (student ID or barber license) 4. Must be approved by the Barbers International Competition Directors 5. Must submit competition registration fee with application. Fees will be returned no later than October 22 if eligibility is denied.
Competition Rules for all Categories
1. Competitors must arrive at the designated time for sign-in and pre-judging model check. 2. Competitors are responsible for supplying their own tools, equipment, hand or table mirrors, disinfectants, and models. 3. Models must not have served as a competition model within 30 days of the BI Competition. 4. Models must be at least 16 years old. A parental consent letter must be attached to the application for models under 18 years of age. 5. All models will be required to sign a model release form upon pre-judging and sign-in. 6. Model’s hair must not be pre-cut and will be checked at official sign-in. 7. Competitors must dress professionally, including a barber jacket or smock. 8. Competitors must perform cuts according to competition guidelines. 9. No talking is permitted during the competition.
Competition Guidelines for all Categories
1. Sanitation procedures and safety precautions must be practiced during the competition. 2. Haircuts must be performed on clean, dry or damp hair. Shampoo hair prior to sign-in. 3. Haircuts must be performed using freehand techniques. No clipper guards allowed. 4. Finish styling may be performed only after the haircut has been judged.
Judging Criteria for State Board Taper Cut (Student Barbers only) Objective: To execute a state board taper cut that complies with standard state board practical exam criteria. 1. Finished cut may not be longer than 3” in the top section, shorter than 1” in the top section, nor shorter than 1/16” at the hairline. 2. At least ” of hair must be cut from all sections around the model’s head. 3. Hair must not extend past the hairline when combed down except in the front section. 4. Hair must be gradually tapered and blended from the hairline through the parietal section without holes, gaps, or steps. 5. Hair must be naturally tapered and not “blocked” in the nape area. 6. Haircut will be judged on blending, balance, outline, taper, and sanitation. 7. Safety and sanitation will judged based on safe tool usage, proper disinfection, draping techniques, and professional image. 8. A maximum of 5 points will be given for each judged criterion. Total - 20 possible points.
Judging Criteria for Men’s Clipper Cut (Licensed Barbers & Cosmetologists only) Objective: To execute a men’s clipper cut that suits the model’s hair texture and facial features.
1. Haircut will be judged on blending, balance, outline, taper, and sanitation. 2. Minimum amount of hair to be cut is inch. 3. The use of any styling product and/or styling appliance is permitted. 4. A maximum of 5 points will be given for each judged criterion. Total - 20 possible points.
Judging Criteria for Men’s Fantasy Cut (Students and Licensed Professionals) Objective: To execute a men’s fantasy cut using clippers, shears, and or razor that suits the model’s hair texture and facial features.
1. Haircut will be judged on creativity, execution, and sanitation. 2. At least inch of hair must be cut from each section (top, sides, horseshoe, back, nape). 3. A maximum of 5 points will be given for each judged criterion. Total - 15 possible points.
